Toyota Celica History
Toyota’s Celica was a compact car that was produced from 1970 to 2006. The name of the car came from the Latin word coelica, which literally means “celestial.” In Japan, it was only sold to Toyota’s Corolla Store dealer network.
The car was produced across seven generations, and it featured various bodystyles, including coupés, liftbacks, notchback coupés, and convertibles. In 1973, Toyota introduced the Liftback variant of the Celica. The brand also used the name Liftback GT in North America.
Toyota’s Celica concept was inspired by the Ford Mustang. It was supposed to be a sports car that featured a combination of mechanicals and a body that was derived from the Toyota Carina. Journalists initially thought that the car was based on the Corona.
The first three generations of the Celica were produced in North America using the same engine as the R series. In 1985, Toyota changed the Celica’s drive layout to make it more compact. All-wheel drive models were also introduced from 1986 to 1999. In Japan, variable valve timing was standard on certain models from 1997 to 2000.
In 1986, the Celica’s six-cylinder variant (Celica Supra) become its own model, the Toyota Supra. In the 1990s, lightly modified variants of the Celica were sold through the Vista and Toyopet networks as Corona Coupe.
Toyota utilized the Corona’s 1.9-liter engine for the US-spec versions of the Celica. In Europe, the company also used two 1.6-liter T-series engines. Eventually, Toyota expanded the Celica’s engine line up by adding the 2.0- and 2.2-liter R-series units. The top 18R-G model featured a 145-horsepower engine. This renge-topping variant continues to be a popular model among Toyota enthusiasts.
The development team of Toyota’s new Celica was focused on making the car as comfortable as possible. They also wanted to create a vehicle that was as smooth as possible. To achieve this, the team developed a GTV model that featured independent front and rear suspension. This variant reinforced the Celica’s reputation for being a capable vehicle.
The success of the Celica in European rallying led to Toyota establishing a racing team in Europe. The company also enjoyed strong sales in the UK following the success of its British Touring Car Championship competitors.
From its introuction in 1970, the Celica reached a production milestone of over 4 million. It was produced over the course of its 35 years of existence.
