About Toyota Matrix

toyota matrix owners manual pdf service repair and wiring diagram

Toyota’s Matrix is a compact car manufactured by Toyota Canada in Cambridge, Ontario. It was derived from the Corolla. The Matrix was first introduced in 2002. It was a joint venture between the Japanese carmaker and General Motors. The Pontiac Vibe was produced by NUMMI in Fremont, California.

Until its discontinuation, the Matrix was sold in North America. It was regarded as a more refined variant of the Corolla. It was also sold as a distinct model in Toyota’s sales figures.

Although the Matrix and Vibe were almost identical in their internals and exteriors, they had distinct trim elements. These two compact cars were marketed to younger people and were often referred to as sports wagons. Toyota’s Matrix and Pontiac’s Vibe are similar in appearance to crossover utility vehicles.

The Matrix was first introduced in 2002. It received minor cosmetic updates during the 2005 model year. Following the tenth generation of the Corolla, the Matrix was redesigned entirely in 2008. It was discontinued in 2013 and 2014 in Canada and the United States.

Toyota Matrix’s Models

Standard model (2003–2008)

The base model of the Matrix was priced at $14,800 in 2003. Although it had standard air conditioning, it didn’t have many features, such as power mirrors, blacked-out window frames, and color-keyed mirrors. An upgraded model with an all-wheel drive was available for $1,465.

The addition of all-wheel drive (AWD) allowed the Matrix to increase its curb weight by 7 pounds. It also decreased its power by 7 lb.-ft. During the last year of production, the base price of the Matrix rose to $15,510.

XR model (2003–2008)

The Matrix’s mid-grade model, known as the XR, added various features to its lineup. These included a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a panic button, and a color-matched mirror. The price of the XR trim went up to $18,445, which was almost $300 less than the price of an XRS. When equipped with all-wheel drive, the Matrix would weigh in at 2,965 pounds.

The Matrix’s all-wheel drive was also tuned for the second generation. Although the price of the car stayed the same during the first two years, it increased in the following years.

XRS model (2003–2006)

The XRS model added an upgraded version of Toyota’s 2ZZ-GE engine. Displacing 1,796 cc, the engine produced 180 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque. Although its 11.5:1 compression ratio was mainly responsible for its performance, the engine could also be changed to a second cam profile to improve its output.

The upgraded 2ZZ-GE engine was standard on the XRS model. Its power and efficiency were significantly improved by adding a second cylinder. This new engine could be changed to a second Cam profile through Toyota’s new VVTL-i technology. This new engine could produce up to 180 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque at speeds up to 8,500 rpm.

The 2ZZ-GE engine also required premium gasoline, typically 91 octane or higher in the R+M/2 scale. Although the XRS was only offered with a six-speed manual transmission, it was equipped with a smog pump in 2004. The 2ZZ was then reclassified as an ultra-low emission vehicle in 2004.

The Matrix was able to reach a top speed of around 60 mph in only 114 feet. Due to its front-wheel drive position, the XRS weighed approximately 2,800 pounds. It also has a weight distribution of 59/41, resulting in understeer.

Toyota Matrix’s Recalls

In May 2008, Toyota recalled specific Matrixes and Corollas from the 2003 and 2004 model years due to a problem with the power windows. The company noted that certain parts of the front doors could break. This recall applies only to these vehicles. Another company, General Motors, also issued a similar recall on certain Pontiac Vibes.

In August 2010, Toyota recalled specific Matrixes and Corollas from the 2005 to 2008 model years due to an issue with the engine’s control module. This component could develop a crack and cause the vehicle to light up. Besides this, the company also noted that this issue could cause the car to stall.

In November 2019, Toyota recalled the Matrix, Corollas, and the Toyota Yaris in Mexico due to defective airbags made by the supplier, Takata. These airbags might deteriorate due to the varying weather conditions and high temperatures, which can cause them to malfunction and injure the passengers. In response to the recall, Toyota has informed the owners of these vehicles to replace their frontal passenger airbags. The company has identified 618 cars in Mexico affected by this recall. These vehicles will be replaced on November 22.

Toyota also recalled the Matrix and Vibe from the 2009 to 2010 model years due to different issues. These include the issue with the floor mat and the accelerator pedal.

In October 2012, Toyota recalled ten models, including the Matrix and Corolla. These vehicles were equipped with power window master switches that could develop a sticky or notchy feel. In response to this issue, the company warned that the improper lubrication of the switch could cause it to catch on fire.
